Origin of Marlboro Cigarettes Brand   by Stelu Bartbu

The Marlboro name has been coined after Great Marlborough Street, which happens to be place, where now the originally London manufacturing of Marlboro Cigarette, were established. Phillip Morris having its establishment at London, who set up a group in the year 1902 company at New York. The Company advertised Marlboro cigarette portraying as a woman’s Cigarette with a catchy slogan “Mild as May”‘

The brand was sold during the World War II period. By the end of war three brands firmly established them in the tough cigarette market by the names Lucky Strike, Chesterfield and Camel. All these brands were on the supply list to the US soldiers during the war. When the soldiers returned after the end of the war, there was an immediate ready market created for these three brands.

In the year 1955 Phillip Morris introduced Marlboro with fillter. By 1960 Marlboro researched and introduced a new brand Marlboro Country and promoted it as cigarette of the strong cowboys, who were termed as”Marlboro Men”.

In the year 1972 Marlboro got interested in Motorsport sponsorship associated itself with BRM Formula One Team and Iso Marlboro-Ford. Formula No.1 won. Marlboro’s motorsport sponsorship started with the BRM Formula One team in 1972. Marlboro is also known for its sponsorship of motor racing. This started in 1972 with its sponsorship of Formula One teams BRM and Iso Marlboro-Ford. Marlboro also sponsored Ferrari, Alfa Romeo Formula One, Champ Car, Australian Marlboro Holden Dealer Team, , Toyota, Ducati MotoGP. Marlboro are generally credited as being among the most important of sponsors to the world of Formula-1, having provided financial backing to countless young racers who may not have otherwise been given the opportunity to compete. In mid-2006, special “racing editions” of Marlboro Red were sold in the UK, with a Ferrari-inspired design, although the Ferrari name and badge were not used.

Marlboro is now the largest selling brand of cigaettes in the world.
