The 36-year-old Catalonian born motorcycle racer Manuel Sete Gibernau Bultó who we knew to be retired has come back to the racing track and has been sighted doing some testing action for the Ducati Moto GP team at the Mugello circuit in Italy. These latest news have opened the door for many questions regarding the return of the Spaniard to the competition grounds.
Gibernau’s racing career began when he was a child as his grandfather was the owner of a motorcycling company in Spain. Then in 1990 Sete made his debut at the “Gilera Cup” Championship as well as other junior tournaments in the 250cc category. Some years later in 2001 Gibernau was contacted by the Suzuki team; this was indeed a remarkable season for the young driver as he managed to obtain his first win in Valencia.
In 2003 Sete joined the Gresini-Honda group and won four races despite the unfortunate incident his team mate suffered during the active season. Gibernau’s performance began to become a match for Rossi as his abilities continue to grow.
By the 2004 season Gibernau continue his escalating success but as it is predicted problems began to appear along the way as despite his wins during the Qatar and Czech rounds his menace the Italian Valentino Rossi accused the Spaniard of several wrong doings involving a possible disqualification on Rossi’s side. However; it was Rossi’s team that one involved in several alterations to the track in order to have the Spaniard disqualified. Nevertheless; their rivalry continued and when the 2006 season came Gibernau signed for the Ducati team as he replace former driver Carlos Checa. Unfortunately, this was not the Spaniard’s best season and by October 2006 he announced his retirement from the Moto GP racing world.
More recently only this week; we have learnt that this exceptional driver whose back ground include a total of 173 grands claiming nine victories, 13 pole positions, eight fastest laps and a total of 1,334 points for teams such: Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki and Ducati could be coming back to the fast lanes as he along with Vittoriano Guareschi have been involved in some testing action for once again his latest team Ducati.
No formal announcements have been yet given to the press but Gibernau did make a good impression despite not having driven for years the Spaniard clocked up 20 laps with the Desmosedici GP9 around the Tuscan circuit, recording a best time of 1m53.7s previous to a bad weather condition which interrupted the session.
“Racing motorcycles was my whole life for so many years, and now I’ve rediscovered that feeling I feel really good, like I’m home again. The instinct for riding came back straightaway, even though I obviously need to get back into the habit of going fast” stated Gibernau at the end of the day.
It could be then just a matter of time before the Spaniard makes the final decision to return and be included to the current season or wait and prepare himself for the 2009 world championship.
