From what I can find the bike sells for around £25-30k
Are you looking to buy a bike for transport, the occasional bit of fun, trackdays, sport, long-distance touring, to keep on a plinth?
The 1198R is an out-and-out sportsbike, its natural element is on a track or (very) fast road it only really makes sense to ride in those situations – they become uncomfortable and impractical if you were to tour or commute on one. That means they are only competitive as long as they are top of the tree, every year a newer, faster sportsbike arrives moving offerings from other manufacturers further from the top. For example, the S1000R is at the top at the moment and other European and Japanese manufacturers are struggling to keep up, in 5 years electronically-aided bikes that are faster/better from other manufacturers (and maybe from BMW) will have eclipsed it. Look at old Fireblades, or further back CBs or GPzs, they are not as revolutionary as they once were.
This means that bikes like this are frequently replaced with newer, hotter models and the older ones are relegated. You could, if you wanted keep one in good running order for years and years and thousands and thousands of miles but that is somewhat missing the point.
A byblow of this constant replacement is that secondhand ones become available for poorer types – you can pick up a decent 916 for a song now, there is no way I could have afforded one when new.
